Pianist Magazine’s New Online Piano Courses

Renowned teacher and writer Graham Fitch and I will be hosting new online courses for Pianist Magazine. This will be the first time the magazine has ventured into piano lessons, and the new courses and workshops will hopefully encourage regular readers to engage with Pianist’s teachers and writers.

Graham’s course, which is intended for those of Grade 5 level or above, will take place on February 7th from 12.00 noon to 6.00pm. He will coach eight pianists, guiding them through their chosen repertoire,  in front of an audience. The workshop will be conducted on Zoom, which offers a wonderful chance for those from around the world to join in. There will be a Q&A with Graham, and plenty of opportunity to discuss various aspects of piano playing, from memorising, how to practice, technique and repertoire choices. You can find out much more about Graham’s course by clicking here.

My course will take place on February 21st from 10.00am to around 5.00pm and it will also be conducted on Zoom. Entitled Tricky Corners, I will tutor six participants, coaching them through their chosen repertoire, focusing particularly on sections of pieces which are causing difficulty or are proving ‘Tricky’. All elements will be discussed, from style and interpretation to technical issues and practice ideas. I will work with each course member offering many practical suggestions, and this course will be especially useful for those who have tension related problems.
Attended by participants only, my course will offer an hour’s one-to-one tuition, divided into two half hour sessions. Pianists of elementary to late intermediate level are invited to apply (around Grade 2 – 6, ABRSM standard), and they will be able to chat to fellow course members for coffee during break times, as well as the chance to ask any piano-related questions throughout the day. There will be a short lunch break, as well as a coffee and tea break. You can find out more by clicking here. I’m really looking forward to meeting you!

For those who have recently returned to piano playing, perhaps after a break of a few years, you may be interested in a blog post I wrote for Music Room’s website, which was published earlier this week. It focuses on five tips to consider when returning to the instrument, and you can read it, here.

For much more information about how to practice piano repertoire, take a look at my piano course, Play it again: PIANO (published by Schott Music). Covering a huge array of styles and genres, the course features a large collection of progressive, graded piano repertoire from approximately Grade 1 to advanced diploma level, with copious practice tips for every piece. A convenient and beneficial course for students of any age, with or without a teacher, and it can also be used alongside piano examination syllabuses too.
